CHAPTER 18

PULLING THE LADDERS UP

Apart from the Invitational, one of the most interesting offers to land immediately after the Games was for an event called the Immortals CrossFit Challenge. It was at the time Australia’s leading team CrossFit competition and was being held somewhere in the Gold Coast on 9 and 10 November. One hundred teams of six would be taking part and they’d be littered with Regional-level CrossFit athletes as well as six or seven from the CrossFit Games. It was also held to raise money for charity, so I was in!

One of the reasons I was so keen on going – apart from it being another team event, which I enjoyed, and getting a free trip to Australia of course – was because I’d be competing alongside a friend of mine called Nicola Smith. As well as being a former Great Britain rugby league player and Muay Thai boxing champion, Nicola was also an accomplished CrossFit athlete and she’d finished fourth at this year’s European Regionals. Not only had we trained together a lot but we’d also got on really well. What made the proposition even more attractive was that the third and final girl on our team would be Talayna Fortunato who I’d just competed against at the Invitational. With three decent Regional-level men, Jonnie Larmore, Dean Linder-Leighton and Marcus Smith, completing our team, I was hopeful of continuing my post-Games winning streak and couldn’t wait to get out there.

Held over two days and in memory of fallen soldiers, the Immortals CrossFit Challenge featured five workouts on day one and the reason I’m going to list them is that it gives you an idea of how things change and work at team events:

Workout 1

For time – one boy and one girl work at once through a 12-9-6 rep scheme of overhead squats (60kg for men and 40kg for girls) and burpee box jumps.
